Women love a hot, alpha male in their romance books, right? We
want them well-built and well-hung, brave, protective, the type to ride in on
their noble steed and save the day.
In the paranormal romance genre especially, women like the quintessential
alpha male. Overprotective, possessive, arrogant, sometimes overbearing, usually
self-confident. A swoon-worthy, cocky, smoldering wall of muscle with a thick
head of hair, soulful eyes, and lickable lips.
I’m all for that sexilicious hero. But let’s look deeper.
For me, self-confidence is important. Knowing who he is,
strengths and weaknesses, and having a healthy view of them. For an alpha, it
comes down to leadership. A good leader uplifts those around him. He earns
their respect and trust instead of demanding it. He rallies supporters, he
doesn't bully them. He takes care of those under his care, putting their
welfare above his own. He can mete out judgment and swift punishment ruthlessly
as well as gentle kisses to those he loves.
In my opinion, there is nothing hotter than a man who loves
his kids. Loyalty, responsibility, kindness. A family man who loves his woman
with everything he’s got is the ultimate picture of sexiness.
So what part of original alpha list did I keep in Geo, my alpha hero from Destiny Bewitched?
The possessiveness and protectiveness of course! That's the good part of an alpha, right ladies? You want your man to want you and only you! You want him to stand up for you at any cost. And even if you're capable of kicking some ass on your own (yeah, I had a green belt in Tae Kwon Do, I get it), you still want your man to want to kick some ass for you!

I hope you’ll fall in love with Geo, just like the heroine
Samantha does in Destiny Bewitched. Take a chance on my book and I don’t think
you’ll regret it.
Just for fun, here's my list of favorite PNR heroes:
1. Jericho Barrons from The Fever series
2. Bones from the Night Huntress series
3. Curran from the Kate Daniels series
4. Any Lychan from Kresley Cole's IAD - especially Bowen!
5. And I have to mention my all-time favorite even though it's technically not a PNR - Jamie Fraser from The Outlander series
Now your turn. What makes a good alpha hero for you? Who are your favorite fictional heroes?

Your comment about nothing hotter than a man who loves his kids - my favourite photo of Brad Pitt - he's walking away from camera - one of the kids in his arms - a baby - and the baby bottle is tucked into the back pocket of his jeans - the man went up 100% in sexy rating.
ReplyDeleteI love strong, sexy Alpha male heroes. Bones from the Night Huntress series is definitely my favorite.

For me, a good hero is someone strong, even a little damaged, or arrogant depending on the time period... But beneath all of those craziness, he can be gentle and madly in love:)

ReplyDeletevickie@innovativeonlinebooktours.com
I love rough around the edges type of alpha male but deep down has a heart of gold. And that are fiercely protective of those he cares about.
ReplyDeleteSome of my faves are Acheron,Bowen, Maddox, Wrath, Zsadist and many more.
vampiremistress2010(at)gmail(dot)com
I think one of my favorite characters is Roarke from the In Death series from JD Robb. He's a reformed bad boy, all due to the love he has for his wife, Eve, who is a cop. He's willing to give her anything she wants, but isn't afraid to step back and admit that she can take care of herself usually.
ReplyDeleteHe's protective, but not smothering.

I love a strong hero with a heart of gold
ReplyDeleteI love a hero who goes after what he wants without

ReplyDeletecms72023(at)gmail(dot)com
I love a strong alpha hero, one who commands and leads, but is respectful, caring, responsible, and trustworthy. There are many heroes who are my favorites.
ReplyDeletemanning_j2004 at yahoo dot com
I really love a well-written alpha. Raphael from the Guild Hunter series is my personal favorite. I love how he changes as a result of his love for Elena, while, at the same time, remaining a complete bad ass.

Important alpha characteristics are protrctiveness to those he loves, integrity, strength of character, honor, & self confidence
ReplyDeletewolphcall(at)bellsouth(dot)net
I love dominant, protective, strong alpha's with inner conflicts what makes him seem like the bad guy, which he isn't. I can't choose my favorite hunky alpha there are soooooooo many ;)
ReplyDeletefiza700[at]gmail[dot]com
I just picked up the first book in Kresely Cole's IAD series. I love her historicals, so I am excited about her paranormal ones. I love the MacCarrick brothers. Now you have me curious about Bowen. Since I have to read books in order with a series, I will have to see how long it is before I can read his story.
ReplyDeleteI almost forgot
ReplyDeleteoeamis(at)carolina(dot)rr(dot)com
my hero would have to be strong debonair sexy funny & very protective! So if you know anyone like that.... tree1313chevy@gmail.com
ReplyDeleteMy favorite fictional heros are Vishous, Styx, Dante, basically any of the vampires! I love the way they treat their females. How they are so fiercely protective of them! I'm also quite fond of Carrie Ann Ryan's werewolves! LOL!
ReplyDeletetccmp30@msn.com
Duncan McLeod of Highlander TV series, or Damon from The Vampire Diaries. To me two key ingredients make a hero, charisma, and a willingness to sacrifice everything for his lady love.
ReplyDeleteWhat a fabulous opportunity! Thank you.
Enjoy the hop.

Having just thought about this on the previous blog I'm going to go with Harry Dresden of the Dresden Files. He really embodies what I think of when I hear the word hero. Usually the underdog he just doesn't believe in giving up or not giving it your all...that along with a ton of snark make for an awesome hero.
ReplyDeleteYeah I totally forgot my email address in my excitement achbarrow(at)gmail(dot)com
ReplyDeleteI like my paranormal heroes very tortured and definitely strong.
ReplyDeleteFlowerlady_23@yahoo.com
Possessiveness and quiet vulnerability that the heroine has to chisel away to find. Strong and secure but strong enough to cry if needed.

Strong and sexy...yummy...LOL
ReplyDeleteronnkelly3@aol.com
I agree, nothing better than a strong man with a gentle, protective side for kids!
ReplyDeleteFirst of all, I love the name of your blog, lol. I love a hero with a fierce protective streak. I don't mind if he's a little dominating as well and possessive. It would make verbal sparring with him that much more enjoyable. One of my earliest favorites was Garrett McRieve from Kresley Cole's IAD. Then Sebastian Wroth (how cute was he?!). Lately I'm in lust for the Masters of Cherise Sinclair's Masters of the Shadowlands. They're the most kind-hearted Doms around, but don't cross them because they will dole out punishment.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the great giveaway!

A favorite hero of mine is definitely Roarke of the In Death series. He just has it all =)
ReplyDeleteamandastar84 (at) gmail.com
I like Tara Lain's heroes, for they're different kinds of heroes. They break the mold a bit. Which makes them infinitely more desirable.

You and I must share Jamie Fraser for favorite hero. To me there isn't a certain look for a hero, but I like the attribute of selflessness when I think of heroes.

ReplyDeleteA good alpha for me is a leader with a plan. Even when everything goes wrong they still seem to have some sort of plan. They have so much confidence that others can't help but follow.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite fictional heroes:
1- Heath (My own, from the Existence series. He'll stone me to death if he's not listed first. LOL.)
2- Xavier (Another of my own from the Existence series. He doesn't think he's a hero though.)
3- Jez (One more of mine from the Existence series. She just threatened to burn me alive if she didn't get a mention!)
4- Harry Potter (A kid who kicks the butt of someone that everyone else failed at destroying? Oh sure, the bad guy created that loop hole, but still!)
5- Kel (Protector of the Small quartet by Tamora Pierce.)
6- Iron Man (Using his brains, brawn, and bucks to save people.)
7- The Lorax (One word--- UNLESS)
I love the alpha heros to the extent that I married one.
